Dissociative Identity Disorder- A General Discussion

Dissociative Identity disorder is the disease where simultaneously two or more personality exists within a person, and in some specific circumstances, or frequently these personalities, one or others, take control of his behavior and activities. This creates abnormality and unpredictability in the behavior of the person with this kind of personality disorder and sometimes he/she performs criminal as well as antisocial activities.


The main symptoms are of course, abnormality in behavior, and it varies from person to person depending on the nature of the personality he/she possesses. However, the noteworthy factor is his extreme mode of activities that cannot be counted by any means within the paradigm of normalcy and very often appears as self –explanatory of its abnormality. Very often, the order of the personality seems to be irregular and informed or aware of some factors similar in nature.

Some of the major associated features of this kind of psychosis are:

  • Panic attack
  • Phobia for some particular or for multiple factors
  • Suicidal tendency or a tendency to self-harm
  • Sleep disorder like insomnia, sleep walking or shouting at night or feeling of night terror
  • Frequent mood swing
  • Depression or frustration
  • Alcohol or drug addiction
  • Trauma for some factors or events or about some situation

There are some similar features of the abovementioned problems and associated symptoms. Therefore, there are some precise clinical tests to judge the parameter of this personality disorder and in these below mentioned parameters the disorder is judged:

Intoxication caused by alcohol

Posttraumatic disorder (PTSD)

An overall medical condition is evaluated by general observation and tests.

Nowadays treatment for this sort of psychological disorder is possible although it is ling –term process. It needs cooperation from the side of the patients as well as from the relatives of the patient.
